Protest The SOPA / PIPA Act
Today Thousands of websites are blacking out their content today in a protest against SOPA and PIPA, two Internet piracy control bills pending in Congress that many websites say will censor the Internet and damage its ability to share information.
Many smaller websites are disabling content completely for the day, but others — especially Internet giants whose revenue streams would suffer from a day off — are simply putting markings or links on their homepage to show solidarity with the protest.
English-language Wikipedia and Reddit are the biggest websites that are completely removing their sites’ content for a day (or, in Reddit’s case, half a day).
Wikipedia gives users a quick glance at its page before covering it with a shadowy, black page. Reddit has a more content-filled blackout page with a list of frequently asked questions and links on how to contact lawmakers about the bills.
“History is being made by the more than 10,000 websites that have chosen to boycott SOPA by participating in today’s blackout,”
“It’s time to pull up the emergency brake on this legislation.”
